Himalayan Bronzes focuses on a complet study of 340 medieval-period copper alloy sculptures from the Himalayan régions of Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Nepal and Tibet. For more than 1.500 years, artists in isolated valleys in and adjacent to the mountains of the Himalayas have created magnificent copper-based statues representing deities and spiritual leaders of the Hindu, Buddhist and Bon-Pö religions. Redy's multidisciplinary approach to the study of these statues integrates methods and techniques from art history, art conservation, geology, chemistry, statistics, archaeology, and ethnography to answer art historical and anthropological questions. Her guiding premise is that gathering and combining several types of inforamtion will result in more and better answers than any one type alone. The initial focus is on improving regional attributions of statues to casting centers. This provides a starting point for addressing additionnal problems, such as identifying and understanding regional similitaries and diffreences in technology.

A major theme of this work is that theres is such a thing as technological style and that it complements visual style. Both types of style reflect deliberate choices made by craftsmen. In particular, cultural artifacts result from deliberate choices in raw materials and in methods of transforming those materials into finished products.

The aesthetic effects of various technological choices are worthy of study and stylistic analysis along with other aspects of style. Art historians traditionally classify, date, and identify regional origins of statues on the basis of artistic choices that are visible to the eye. Examples are iconography, the manner of depicting such elements as the figure or its garments, and the manner in which all of the individual elements combine to form a unified image.

Reedy expands the idea of " visible "to include features detectable Under a microscope, with the aid of x-radiographs, and with analytical instruments. Due to a variety of artistic, religious and historical factors, it is very difficult to identify the exact place of manufactures of many Himalyan bronzes. Statues are ofetn attribued to various, and sometimes quite disparate, régions by different art historians. In this book, Reedy tries to assist regional attributions by employing information on technology : casting and decorating methods, elemental composition of metals and the composition of clay cores in hollow casts statues.
